On December 8, 2022,  the Lea County Commission voted to adopt an ordinance requiring abortion providers to comply with federal law in the unincorporated parts of Lea County, New Mexico. Through the passage of this ordinance, abortion was outlawed de facto. 


The passage of this measure made the unincorporated community of Monument (pop. 217) the first unincorporated community in the nation, and the first unincorporated community in New Mexico, to find themselves under an enforceable ordinance which result in the cessation of abortion within their unincorporated community.


The vote also made Monument the first census designated place in the nation, and the first census designated place in New Mexico, to find themselves under an enforceable ordinance which result in the cessation of abortion within their CDP.


The vote of the Lea County Commission, which covered the unincorporated community and CDP of Monument, was unanimous, 5-0.

The passage of this measure made the unincorporated community of Nadine (pop. 458) the second unincorporated community in the nation, and the second unincorporated community in New Mexico, to find themselves under an enforceable ordinance which result in the cessation of abortion within their unincorporated community.


The vote also made Nadine the second census designated place in the nation, and the second census designated place in New Mexico, to find themselves under an enforceable ordinance which result in the cessation of abortion iin their CDP.


The vote of the Lea County Commission, which covered the unincorporated community and CDP of Nadine, was unanimous, 5-0.

03. NORTH HOBBS, NM

On December 8, 2022,  the Lea County Commission voted to adopt an ordinance requiring abortion providers to comply with federal law in the unincorporated parts of Lea County, New Mexico. Through the passage of this ordinance, abortion was outlawed de facto. 


The passage of this measure made the unincorporated community of North Hobbs (pop. 6,767) the third unincorporated community in the nation, and the third unincorporated community in New Mexico, to find themselves under an enforceable ordinance which result in the cessation of abortion within their unincorporated community.


The vote also made North Hobbs the third census designated place in the nation, and the third census designated place in New Mexico, to find themselves under an enforceable ordinance which result in the cessation of abortion within their CDP.


The vote of the Lea County Commission, which covered the unincorporated community and CDP of North Hobbs, was unanimous, 5-0.

04. Caprock, NEW MEXICO

On December 8, 2022,  the Lea County Commission voted to adopt an ordinance requiring abortion providers to comply with federal law in the unincorporated parts of Lea County, New Mexico. Through the passage of this ordinance, abortion was outlawed de facto. 


The passage of this measure made the unincorporated community of Caprock (pop. 29) the fourth unincorporated community in the nation, and the fourth unincorporated community in New Mexico, to find themselves under an enforceable ordinance which result in the cessation of abortion within their unincorporated community.


The vote of the Lea County Commission, which covered the unincorporated community of Caprock, was unanimous, 5-0.

On December 8, 2022,  the Lea County Commission voted to adopt an ordinance requiring abortion providers to comply with federal law in the unincorporated parts of Lea County, New Mexico. Through the passage of this ordinance, abortion was outlawed de facto. 


The passage of this measure made the unincorporated community of Crossroads (pop. 35) the fifth unincorporated community in the nation, and the fifth unincorporated community in New Mexico, to find themselves under an enforceable ordinance which result in the cessation of abortion within their unincorporated community.


The vote of the Lea County Commission, which covered the unincorporated community of Crossroads, was unanimous, 5-0.

06. MALJAMAR, NEW MEXICO

On December 8, 2022,  the Lea County Commission voted to adopt an ordinance requiring abortion providers to comply with federal law in the unincorporated parts of Lea County, New Mexico. Through the passage of this ordinance, abortion was outlawed de facto. 


The passage of this measure made the unincorporated community of Maljamar (pop. 39) the sixth unincorporated community in the nation, and the sixth unincorporated community in New Mexico, to find themselves under an enforceable ordinance which result in the cessation of abortion within their unincorporated community.


The vote of the Lea County Commission, which covered the unincorporated community of Maljamar, was unanimous, 5-0.

07. McDonald, NEW MEXICO

On December 8, 2022,  the Lea County Commission voted to adopt an ordinance requiring abortion providers to comply with federal law in the unincorporated parts of Lea County, New Mexico. Through the passage of this ordinance, abortion was outlawed de facto. 


The passage of this measure made the unincorporated community of McDonald (pop. 30) the seventh unincorporated community in the nation, and the seventh unincorporated community in New Mexico, to find themselves under an enforceable ordinance which result in the cessation of abortion within their unincorporated community.


The vote of the Lea County Commission, which covered the unincorporated community of McDonald, was unanimous, 5-0.
